Hair is never simple. Honestly, hiring a full-time stylist would be my ultimate luxury. However, as things stand, I’m left to my own devices and as someone who lacks the skill, the right hair tools are essential. So here are the best hair tools on the market. Just until we can afford a professional at our beck and call around the clock, ok?

The Ultimate Hair Tool – Hairbrushes

A good hairbrush can make all the difference to your routine – and you might need a couple of different ones for different situations. The Tangle Teezer Ultimate Hairbrush and Boucleme Tangle Slayer Wet Brush are both incredible for untangling hair. I like to use them in-shower to distribute conditioner – I know brushing wet hair is a sin, but if I don’t, the tangles are unmanageable. Plus, the conditioner acts as a perfect lubricant.

I love the Aveda Paddle Brush for brilliant hair care in between washes. This brush is a classic for a reason. It is a great all-rounder for those who don’t want to own a million hairbrushes (I can’t relate), detangling pretty painlessly. However, it also smooths frizz and stimulates the scalp. As a bonus, it looks chic as hell.

On the go, though, I favour a Denman Boar Bristle Brush. Sure, they’re not quite up there with a Mason Pearson – but they are a must-have at about a tenth of the price. Perfect for those prone to flyaways and frizz, they are the hair tools to quickly tame a barnet spiralling out of control.

The Basic Toolbox – Hairdryers

In terms of hairdryers, I love anything by Babyliss. I find them affordable, reliable, and up there with the more luxurious (and obscenely priced) hair tools on the market.

For those who favour a bouncy blowout, the Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Styler is an incredible timesaver – acting as a barrel brush and dryer all in one. To add definition, the Amika High Tide Deep Waver is perfect for those who are cack-handed (like me). It offers a similar look to a barrel curler but with far less faff and burnt fingertips.

Essential Hair Tools – Maintenance

Hair styling is often as much about maintenance, though. The excellent Go-To Skincare Face Case keeps a style looking good for longer. Not only does a silk pillowcase help look after your precious face, but it can minimize frizz and keep hair looking freshers for longer. Achieve further freshness with the Boucleme Silk Scrunchies. Due to high demand, they are often hard to get hold of! If you like a wavy, textured look, simply tie up hair overnight in a bun using one of these, and wake to soft, defined waves without any damage.

Finally, there is not a tool, per se, but an absolute workhorse in my collection. A Godsend if you don’t have the time or energy to style your hair: the IGK Beach Club Volumizing Texture Spray. Spritz around the crown, ruffler your finger through, and any messiness instantly looks like it’s there on purpose. Think of it as the anti-style styler.
