What movie to watch when there’s nothing to watch?

I often find myself bored at home with nothing to do. I’ve watched many movies and TV series, which is a pain when trying to find something new. For those of you who haven’t seen as many films as me, read below for my recommendations for a movie to watch when bored.

What are some action movies worth watching?

Pirates of the Caribbean – Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dr: Gore Verbinski

Firstly, Johnny Depp. I am sure you know about this film already but If you don’t, it is a film about pirates. We get introduced to Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) and her obsessive lover Will (Orlando Bloom), who wish to get dragged into a life of danger by Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

Run All Night (2015), Dr: Jaume Collet-Serra

This film involves ex-mob members who end up going against each other over the murder of a mob bosses son. It has all the telephone calls from Liam Neeson we could ever hope for along with the action. This movie is different from other capture and escape movies we are used to, as this time Liam is up against multiple foes. Some are stronger than him.

RED (2010), Dr: Robert Schwentke

In addition, Red is about a retired CIA operative who falls in love with his agent who sends him his monthly cheques. A mission in which Bruce Willis’ character was involved a long time ago is brought into question and he is made to go on the run. Can he maintain his relationship whilst being hunted?

The Revenant (2016), Dr: Alejandro González Iñárritu

The revenant is about Native Indians vs Americans. The Native Indians are looking for one of their members, who was kidnapped by Americans. Due to this, every time the Native Indians come across Americans, they kill them causing the Americans to stay on the move. Furthermore, Leonardo’s character has a son who is half Native Indian. This causes tension within the American camp.

Wanted (2008), Dr: Timur Bekmambetov

Finally, Wanted is about a young man called Wesley who is bored of life. Wesley experiences mental episodes in which his heart rate increases tremendously, and causes him to have severe panic attacks. He comes across a league of assassins who want to recruit him, to kill the man who murdered his father. By the way, his girlfriend cheats on him with his best friend, and he is aware of this.

What are some Drama’s worth watching? TV series or movie?

The Crown (2016), TV Series

Firstly, The Crown centres around the British royal family. It begins with Elizabeth getting married to Philip and enjoying their honeymoon. Unfortunately, the honeymoon is cut short, due to the death of Elizabeth’s father, causing her to take the throne. This show is only available on Netflix.

The Godfather (1972), Dr: Francis Coppola

The Godfather follows the Corleone family, as they navigate life post the attempted assassination of the head of the family. This movie clocks in at around three hours, but well worth the watch if you have time to kill.

The Irishman (2019), Dr: Martin Scorsese

The Irishman is a film about Frank Sheeran, a truck driver. Frank does jobs that cause him to meet interesting people involved in the mob. As he grows within the mob, his ability to deliver on jobs causes tensions. Two brewing sides rival for his loyalty which ultimately is tested together with the request of an assassination.

Pride & Prejudice (2005), Dr: Joe Wright

Pride & prejudice is a film adaptation of the novel written by Jane Austen. It is a film about the delicacies of womanhood and the trivia of reading. Moreover, education was not the main focus of women at the time and was discouraged. Follow Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) as she bewitches the rich and handsome Mr Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen).

Geralds Game (2017), Dr: Mike Flanagan

Gerald’s game can count as a thriller as much as a drama. It is about a married couple who decide to take a retreat into the woods. Gerald is the husband who likes to play games during intimate sessions with his wife. One day the intimacy goes awry. What’s worse is his wife is handcuffed to the bed, and the door isn’t locked.

What comedy films can I watch when bored?

Bridesmaids (2011), Dr: Paul Feig

This film is hilarious. It centres around Lilian who is the bride. She meets people along the way and they come together for the wedding as her wedding party. Consequently, some members of the group fight for the affections of Lilian, whilst the rest tackle their own life issues. This movie will happily cause you to forget the time.

Dodgeball – A True Underdog Story (2004), Dr: Rawson Thurber

Dodgeball is a film about the named sport. It follows the Average Joe’s who play in the national competition to save their gym. Their competition is Globo Gym. Comparatively, Globo Gym is owned by an arrogant fatphobic, exercise freak, who wants to win the competition to purchase the Average Joe’s gym. A film full of twists and humour will certainly keep you occupied.

Deadpool (2016), Dr: Tim Miller

Deadpool is a comic book character who resides within the marvel universe. Deadpool’s alias Wade Wilson is suffering from illness. Wade decides to try out for testing because he is dying, and he wants one last shot to win. Unfortunately, the testing goes wrong and he ends up becoming an anti-hero who can’t be killed. What will he do to the people who turned him into his alter-ego?

What is a good chick flick movie to pass the time?

Bratz (2007), Dr: Sean McNamara

If you grew up in the 90s or early 2000s, you’ll remember the Bratz dolls. This is a live-action film about four girlfriends. They then attend a new school, which has cliques. The fact that the four girls attend high school as part of their own social group, is a big no-no. The head girl tries to separate them, to regain control over the students.

Clueless (1995), Dr: Amy Heckerling

Equally to the aforementioned film, Clueless is a film loosely based on the novel Emma by Jane Austen. There is a new girl in town, that Cher (the popular girl), wants to give a makeover. It follows the life of Beverly Hills high school girls, their boyfriends, dogs and rich dads. A cult classic that featured its own tv series spin-off.

The Duff (2015), Dr: Ari Sandel

Designated Ugly Fat Friend. It’s literally as cruel as it sounds. Bianca is the movie’s smart girl who’s got hot friends, thus being cool with all the guys. In addition, she comes to the realisation that she is the duff of the group, and decides to enlist the help of her hot neighbour guy friend, to make her more appealing. Definitely a good movie, to waste time.

Mean Girls (2004), Dr: Mark Waters

Lastly, mean girls are the ultimate girly cult classic film. It centres around Kady, a white girl from Africa who has to navigate American high school, not to mention Kady has only ever been homeschooled. What may be worse, is that she has a crush on the popular girls’ boyfriend. Someone is about to die.
