The 29th Screen Actors Guild Awards occurred last Sunday night and spiced up this award season. So far, we have seen films and actors who are entirely sweeping the board. While they may be deserving, watching the same people win at every award show gets boring. And this is where the SAG Awards come in. Sunday’s event was excellent for all who love to root for the underdog. We saw unexpected (yet completely deserving) wins from Everything Everywhere All at Once and Brendan Fraser.
But the surprises did not end there. While some of our ‘Best Dressed’ are considered regulars on our lists now (we cannot help that Zendaya never misses), there were also some surprise appearances from less-expected stars. So, now that you’re on the edge of your seat, we invite you to explore our list of the best looks from the night.
SAG Awards Choice: Valentino
She is finally back! Red carpets across the globe have been missing Zendaya since the Emmys back in September, and our eyes were finally blessed with not one but two red carpet appearances from the Euphoria star this weekend. Zendaya took to The NAACP Image Awards red carpet on Saturday night before gracing the Screen Actors Guild Awards with her presence on Sunday.
Zendaya took to the red carpet in a custom Valentino gown. The look was pink but not PP Pink. The light blush hue was a refreshing take on Valentino pink, as the beloved fuchsia looks have become somewhat oversaturated. The strapless gown featured an array of three-dimensional roses across the skirt that flowed into a train of flowers trailing behind her. The dress was paired with glistening Bulgari jewellery in a look fit for Hollywood’s princess.
SAG Awards Choice: Carolina Herrera
Cara Delevingne was the fashion icon of my teenage years. Still, her looks haven’t captivated me in the same way in recent years. However, Cara’s black Carolina Herrera jumpsuit returned her to the SSEDITORIAL 2023 SAG Awards best-dressed list. The look perfectly blended a chic suit and a ballgown with two delicate roses on the waist and bust. It was paired perfectly with a sleek hairstyle and bold red lips. This look excites us for the 2010s it-girls to resurface on the fashion scene.
SAG Awards Choice: Versace
Jenna Ortega is proving to be Gen-Z’s answer to Cara Delevingne. The rising it-girl is everywhere, and we are confident this is only the start of the actress’s red-carpet success. Jenna chose a vintage Versace gown for the SAG Awards that matched her gothic aesthetic. The black leather gown was asymmetrical with one shoulder and a wide slit where the skirt bunched just below the waist.
Not only did Jenna give us one of the best looks of the night but also one of the best celebrity presenting moments; Ortega was paired with Aubrey Plaza, where the deadpan duo put their dark humour on display as they questioned why the SAG Awards thought they would complement each other in a hilarious skit.
Haley Lu Richardson
SAG Awards Choice: Carolina Herrera
This year Haley Lu Richardson joins her Shake It Up co-star on our Best Dressed list, although it’s safe to say that both Haley and Zendaya have come a long way since their Disney Channel days. Haley has since shot to stardom in films The Edge of Seventeen, Split and most recently in the second season of The White Lotus. Haley Lu Richardson wore a pearl-encrusted Carolina Herrera gown from their Pre-Fall 2023 collection. The black strapless number had a classic silhouette, but the scattered pearls added a delicate yet eye-catching detail.
SAG Awards Choice: Giorgio Armani
And finally, she has done it again. Zendaya changed into another strapless pink gown to present the award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor with Irish actor Paul Mescal, this time opting for a Giorgio Armani number. This sleek and simplistic look was made visually interesting with some angular colour-blocking and a small cut-out under the bust. The watch was yet again styled with Bulgari jewels. Particularly prominent was the sparkling choker that proved that necklaces are not out, Zendaya has spoken.
