FLO Is Taking Over The World And We Love To See It
It’s been a while since I fell in love with a Girl Group until FLO burst onto the scene last year. Girl groups have been around for a long time, from The Supremes to BlackPink; however, we haven’t had a girl group like FLO. Island Records founded the Group in 2019 with members Stella Quaresma, Jorja Douglas, and Renee Downer.
Their debut song, Cardboard Box, released in March 2022, took social media by storm and was produced by MNEK. FLO gives me nostalgic feelings; their sound is reminiscent of Destiny’s Child but with a fresh take.
The Musical Style of FLO
FLO is a force that the music industry has to reckon with. The girls are equal. No one outshines the other girl, unlike other brands such as the Pussycat Dolls, which only had one member as the lead, Nicole Scherzinger.
With FLO, you can tell that they are like sisters and want to make sure that each girl shines, which a girl group should be doing. Their debut song, Cardboard Box, was perfect for launching their careers. The catchy lyrics and beat are reminiscent of 2000s R&B but with a fresh take for a new generation.
Review of FLO’s EPs
Their EP, The Lead, was stunning. Their second single, Immature, contained the Y2K sound but was edgier, and the music video was stunning, darker than Cardboard Box yet still had that Y2K look reminiscent of TLC’s No Scrubs and Aaliyah’s Are You That Somebody? It was grown and sexy, showcasing their vocals and maturity. Keeping the theme of breakup and knowing your self-worth, Flo’s ‘Losing You’ is a slow R&B ballad that takes us back to the 1990s/ 2000s when slow R&B jams were topping the charts. Think Mary J Blige or Mariah Carey. Their sisterhood shines through in their music and style.

FLO has been working hard to give us the music we will enjoy. They collaborated with British Rapper Stormzy for a remix of his single Hide & Seek; the single was stunning; however, the remix added beautiful synchronised harmonies that showcased that they are a strong vocal girl group.
Their single Fly Girl, released in April 2023, featuring Missy Elliot, is a work of art. It interpolates Missy Elloit’s Work It. However, it is still a fresh sound, which I appreciate as sometimes heavily sampled songs can be boring. The music video was to die for sexy and fun, which embodies the girls to the tee. The fashion for the music video was on point; it has been a while since a music video wowed me.
FLO’s second EP, The 3 of Us, released in July 2023, was just as great as their first one and gave us a taste of what their album will be like. I can’t wait for their album. From sultry songs to sisterhood ballads, this EP gave us a sneak peek of their album, and it is going to serve.
Impact in Fashion
Girl Groups have always been fashion icons. The Supreme’s wore matching coloured gowns, and the Spice Girls’ individual looks are still being talked about to this day.
FLO’s fashion style is individual yet harmonious, with a Y2K look popular with Gen Z that is still fresh and modern for the younger generation. Their stylist, Kirsty Stewart, has masterminded all their looks, from casual trendy outfits to red carpet glamour. She captures each girl’s personality as well as making them harmonious. Their hair and makeup are perfect. A mix of 2000s and 2020s is Chef Kiss; these ladies also know how to switch up their hair, which adds to that sexy girlboss attitude they have.
FLO can create a style that is 2000s-inspired with a modern twist, which I enjoy as it doesn’t feel as if they are cosplaying. The Girls attended the Diesel Show and coordinated well with each other without compromising their style. FLO mixes streetwear and high fashion pieces, which I last saw in a girl group a long time ago.
You can tell that the ladies enjoy fashion and are involved in their image, which shows how in control these ladies are.
FLO Have been Booked and Busy
The Group have been on a tour across England and America, and their outfits have been amazing each leg of the tour. Sexy and confident, which embodies the band’s personality. They have been giving us a snapshot of them working in America for their album, and I am so excited for the album as I know it is going to be bop after bop after listening to their catalogue. Seeing a girl group where everyone shines and can sing and dance is refreshing.
