Waterparks! The Emerging Band You Must Hear

Waterparks have been composing music since 2011 but are only now emerging into the media as they gain a larger fanbase. Let me introduce Awsten, Geoff and Otto; these boys are originally from Houston, Texas and produce varied genres of tunes that they perform around the globe. From singing, rapping, and screaming, these lads have an impressive range of songs, spanning pop-punk, rock, electropop, alternative, hyperpop, and hip-hop tracks. Though they may not be everyone’s cup of tea, there are tons of vibes to choose from.

Waterparks on Netflix

You may know their song ‘Telephone’ from the hit Netflix Original ‘Heartstopper’ played during the season one party scene. It’s an upbeat track that perfectly combines with the show, and I was thrilled to hear it pop up. It’s touching to see obvious growth from the band as they are now featured on Netflix. These cheerful compositions represent the heart of Waterparks and are finally being acknowledged across the media.

They’re also recognised by their lead singer with a continuous streak of coloured hair and exuberant makeup. His distinctive bright hair gives the creative and alternative narrative that forms the band’s aesthetic. The makeup is a trademark and consists of red stars or green crucifixes largely covering the eyes. I adore the artistic insight into their looks, and it’s a moving contribution to the band when the fanbase copies the application. It has become apparent that this makeup is now a trend, especially at concerts.

Live Performances

Despite the widening fanbase and the new destinations amongst tour lists, the concert tickets still sell as cheap as £25. However, it’s still worth queuing slightly earlier to ensure a spot where you can see clearly. Their concerts aren’t designed for the faint-hearted; there will be swearing, sweaty huddles, pushing and multiple mosh pits paired with their heavier songs. You are bound to get sweaty and irritated, but It’s worth the hassle. The live shows are a couple of hours of pyrotechnics, detailed stage props and backgrounds accompanying their enthusiastic performances.

The name ‘Waterparks’ supposedly comes from an inside joke the band used on an ex-band member. The current band would invite the ex-member to a waterpark but drive him to rehearsals instead, forcing him to attend in his swimwear. Although, when Googled, you will find suggestions for your nearest swimming pool, which isn’t a great marketing technique on their part.

Waterparks create a sense of community towards alternative people and showcase an understanding of such communities. Their fanbase is a combination of minorities and is generally an excitable and welcoming community that I am proud to say I am a part of.

They are personally one of my favourite bands, and I think it is time they finally had a raging spotlight overhead. I believe they will release more exciting tracks that will hopefully be played on the radio globally one day.
