Robert Wun Might Have The Best Makeup Ideas For Spring

Through Makeup, we can mould and guide how we present beauty to meet artistry. Makeup pushes a runway look to completion, finishing the idea and continuing the aesthetic. Cosmetics allow for a last-minute burst of creativity before the garments meet the runway and usually offer further insight for the audience. I came across the Robert Wun Spring-Summer 2024 collection, and I was grasped by every aspect.

The collection is innovative and astonishing as a line; however, I want to focus on the makeup first. In the catwalk community, it is common for models to wear minimalist and natural-looking applications. This is usually due to the main focus being towards the garments themselves and the restricted time frame artists usually have; it’s a stressful environment!

The MUA (Makeup up artist) team were given free rein or a more creative brief for Wun’s line, and as an MUA, I’m sure they would appreciate some refreshing ideas. A more outlandish and creative take being allowed on the models is my favourite feature of catwalk couture. I want to see something beautifully unique and gorgeously daring. I’m sure many can agree that they are more interested in genuinely interesting applications of makeup as it reads as more impressive and definitely gives more creative tones. 

“Less is more” is the approach I believe was used across Wun’s make-up team as they have applied themselves by focusing on one particular aspect of each model. These aspects, for example, include a stunningly chic, over-winged liner that resembles sharpness to kill.

You cannot go wrong with an impressive black eyeliner; I loved this inclusion. The biting red they chose to include exaggerates exciting shades and is cohesive throughout the collection. A dangerous red will always be a couture element in the industry. Glossy reds underneath the matching gems exuberate and uplift the tones, allowing for further glamour. Gems can come across as tacky if applied incoherently, though these read as stones and continue the vibe of luxury and chic wear. I fell in love with the application that replicated blood drips, and despite seeing similar creations before, it never gets old. 

Makeup Contrasting the Collection

With such a courageous line of couture garments, there must be room for contrast. Therefore, the juxtaposed blue garment with matching makeup is stunning! The opaque blue lip is an iconic feature that is to die for. This lip application is a statement piece and perfectly compliments the model’s skin tone. It is always favoured when you can select your models in coordination with the garments and apply cosmetics to match. This is a team who are cohesive and coordinated. 

At times like this, many of us would have high respect for the crew involved in these runways. The MUAs did a stunning job and are given little to no credit. Robert Wun was the mastermind behind the collection, yet we see no other exposed credit for the other creatives involved. 

Pearls, gems and colours all coincide to form outstanding accessories in order to complete the glamorous aesthetic. The aesthetic meets in the middle with uniqueness and quirk as it accentuates the avant-garde taste throughout the collection. The makeup is only the finale of the line, the icing on the cake, if you will. I wish that more high fashion brands explored the creativity of makeup more frequently.
