Oscars 2023 Is This Year’s Most Surprising Awards So Far
Last night marked the 95th Academy Awards, better known as the Oscars. It might have been this season’s most fashionable award show. The biggest names in film gathered in Los Angeles’ Dolby Theatre to honour the contributions made to the industry over the past 12 months. The countless looks were a beautiful by-product of this star-studded event.
Emily Blunt
Oscars 2023 Choice: Valentino
Andy Sachs, Emily Charlton, and even Miranda Priestly would approve. Emily Blunt’s sleek Valentino look was classic and timeless. The white off-shoulder gown was clean and perfectly form-fitting. The dress came courtesy of Valentino’s Urban Riviera collection, and pink Chopard earrings accessorised it, adding the right amount of colour to the look.
Cara Delevigne
Oscars 2023 Choice: Elie Saab
Cara Delevingne is genuinely having a fashion comeback. Last month she made her way onto our SAG Awards Best Dressed List, and here she is again. This time the model and actress wore a bright red gown from Elie Saab that epitomised red-carpet dressing. The gown featured a classic ballgown silhouette with a dramatic leg slit; each pleat was perfectly placed as the dress immaculately clung to her figure before draping dramatically below the waist.
The asymmetrical design added an exciting neckline rather than a classic bandeau. Ultimately, the outfit was perfectly accessorised with red shoes, sparkling diamonds and glamorous makeup. This look is what I would dream of wearing to the Oscars, and I think it will be on everyone’s minds for a long time.
Tems
Oscars 2023 Choice: Lever Couture
We all remember when La La Land was wrongly announced as the Best Picture winner or last year when Will Smith smacked Chris Rock on stage; The Oscars are no stranger to scandal. However, I did not expect this year’s to be Tems’ dress.
The controversy surrounding the look was not whether or not people liked the dress; it was the fact that the highly structured gown featured a headpiece that appeared to obstruct the view of those sitting behind her during the ceremony. That said, if I sat behind Tems last night, I would have loved looking at such a beautiful dress for a couple of hours.
The Ukrainian fashion house Lever Couture designed the dress, and there is no way to describe it other than as a work of art. The silhouette was sculptural, yet the material appeared so delicate that it was almost cloud-like. Whether you’re on team Tems or feeling bad for those who sat behind her, there is no way to escape the fact that this look was immaculate.
Lady Gaga
Oscars 2023 Choice: Versace
We all know Lady Gaga and Donatella Versace have an extremely close-knit relationship, but that did not stop me from gasping when I saw her step out on the champagne carpet in the black gown we saw Gigi Hadid wear on the runway just three days earlier. The black gown was sheer on the upper portion with a visible boning detail that mimicked the bones of a traditional corset gown. The dress then met the dropped waist A-line skirt, which further played with the conventional ball gowns we are used to seeing at these events. This garment created a look that pushed and pulled between classic and avant-garde.
Danai Gurira
Oscars 2023 Choice: Jason Wu
Black Panther, Wakanda Forever’s Danai Gurira stole the show at last night’s Oscars when she stepped out in a black ballgown with her hair styled in a high up-do that paid tribute to African women. The look was equally beautiful and impactful. Our favourite detail was the delicate string of diamonds that sat at the base of the hair instead of accessorising with a necklace.
Malala Yousafzai
Oscars 2023 Choice: Ralph Lauren
Malala Yousafzai shone in a sparkling Ralph Lauren gown at last night’s ceremony. The look was covered in sequins, dazzling onlookers as she graced the champagne carpet. The dress was accessorised with even more sparkles as the Nobel Prize Laureate wore one diamond and one emerald ring, in honour of Pakistan, along with a pair of impressive Fred Leighton earrings that formerly belonged to Queen Soraya Tarzi of Afghanistan.
Rihanna
Oscars 2023 Choice: Alaïa
If someone had told me 24 hours ago that Rihanna would wear a turtleneck to the Oscars, and I would love it, I wouldn’t have believed them. However, here we are in the event’s aftermath, and all I can think about is Rihanna’s Alaïa look. The layering, the leather, the makeup, the hair; it was all perfect. And in true Rihanna style, she kept giving us more looks as the night went on. For her performance of Lift Me Up, the singer wore a dazzling Maison Margiela set before changing into a green Bottega Veneta look later in the night. While all three looks were beautiful, the Alaïa was my favourite.
