New York, New York, it’s a heck of a town; the food is expensive, but fashion week’s now. NYFW FW26 is my favourite season because I am a hot girl—literally. I prefer warmer climates and natural fibres that keep me warm in winter. Furthermore, for a significant portion of my life, I only shopped in a new brand based on their outerwear. If both the coats and jackets were unimpressive, I left to shop elsewhere.
Now, in my capacity as editor, I am concerned about the fashion industry as a whole. I love fashion so much that I don’t want it to continue if it doesn’t contribute more benefits than drawbacks to society. My biggest concern is pollution. I understand the desire to produce 70+ looks for one collection, because as a designer it’s your job to create wearable art, which is undoubtedly a creative endeavour. However, creating skip loads of garments for them to end up on a third-world country beach is an unjustifiable practice.
New York strikes me as a place that puts profit above creativity. Any businesswoman will tell you that the two must co-exist. However, New York’s balance is slightly off. It’s a tad more elitist and uninviting. It has a classist air to its life cycle from sketch to retail store delivery.
With heavy hitters like Michael Kors and Cucculelli Shaheen, I hope New York brings it. Here are the NYFW FW26 fashion shows and presentations for you to keep an eye on and watch in retrospect.
