Namilia SS24: “In loving memory of my sugar daddy” Collection

Namilia’s contribution to Berlin’s Spring collection is a direct story that inspired a politically stunning line. This collection celebrates the post-feminist hero Namilia and its creative take on biblical misogyny. Dramatically expressing how women are written as either a “Virgin” or a “Whore”, Namilia decided to take matters into its own hands by combining the two and flipping it on its head. Namilia said, “Our army of bimbo sugar babies, glamorous trophy wives, and villainous vixens are breaking norms of femme sexual expression”, giving the line a deep and alluring meaning. Nan Li and Emilia Pfohl knew exactly what they were doing and did it exceptionally!

Namilia, Oh my God!

Sex sells. As much as we hate to admit it, we can all be dumbed down by our animalistic hormones. This line indulges in sexual urges and reverses the negativity of slut shaming. Showcasing unbothered sexual expression allows for the line to banish shaming or judgment towards women.

One of my favoured fashion topics will always be the freedom of sexual positivity, which was greatly advertised across this collection. Throughout the industry and everyday wear, being sex-positive allows for showing skin and wearing whatever you may choose, and there is something pretty punk about that. The genres that appear the most sexual are lingerie and punk since lingerie is created to be sexy, and punk was formed to go against the “rules” and “normal” fashion etiquette. These garments all have a punk and gothic hue that attracts a rebellious connotation, which I adore.

The skimpiness intertwined with the religious aspects forms a concoction that forces the audience to turn their heads and question the morality of the designers (the whole purpose). The irony is people will question such topics when it’s turned on its head. However, in the original context of misogyny and sexist history, it is “what society is used to”.

Divine Diversity

You can never muster negative thoughts when it relates to diversity in the media. It’s extremely rare that in the fashion industry, you will find a line that is 100% inclusive to all minorities, and this line made the cut within making those decisions. The age outlook was not shunned as mature models graced the runway in these gorgeous garments. Age is just a number, and I respect that at that age, they are pursuing careers in such a cutthroat industry.

The multitude of body types and shapes reiterate that anyone can be sexy! We all wish for the confidence to reveal skin. You don’t need “the perfect body” because what defines the perfect body? Everyone needs the reminder that as long as you retain confidence, you are indefinitely sexy.

Amongst this femme-infused line, I can spot typically masculine bodies gracing us wearing feminine attire, which automatically nods towards queer representation. This encapsulates the feminine energy engrossed in the collection. The selection of the model with one arm was another impressive inclusive choice as they exuded confidence and sexual faith. All Models show an individual perspective within the storyline and we have an array of appearances, age and gender.

Essential Accessories

Of course, for Sugar Daddy’s funeral, we are in mourning. Therefore, the addition of veils was essential! These religious and formal covers of lace and mesh add a sophisticated and daunting aspect to the line. Uplifting the bimbo outfits with the veil application, we are handed a factor of gothic couture, which leads towards the alternative and demonic twist. An accessory that I always admire is an umbrella! Constructed of black lace, this eccentric umbrella continues gothic whimsy and beautifully tragic detail. It’s a funeral, after all, so a mysterious umbrella is necessary.

Juxtaposing the alternative flare, models carried tacky bimbo handbags that varied in size and speech. Covered in modern lingo and swear words, I love the random additions that contrast the black garments. The pairing is immaculate!

Structure and materials

From extremely avant-garde shoulders to wearing limited fabrics, asses jiggled down the catwalk and gave us an eye full that would either entertain or disgust. To me, that is the definition of art.

Giving chic fashion with a side order of sex, Namilia undoubtedly had to provide black leather and lace, enhancing the sexual tension. Viewers could debate these choices established as either trashy or classic, and I’m going to conclude both, considering the connotations of the inspiration.

Namilia Spring 2024 Collection

Namilia struck a nerve with this line, and I must consider them to be added to my personal favourites. Nan Li and Emilia Pfohl have impacted my style and how I now produce my own garments. I think this is a love or hate collection, depending on your personal views. I personally want to see more lines like this in the industry and from more luxury brands to avoid the taboo implications of partnering with it.
