Selkie Brings The Best Out Of Cottage Core
New York Fashion Week pulled some stunning outfits and incredible stunts; however, my head was turned at the gracious appearance of Selkie. Kimberley Gordon is the founder of Selkie and the mastermind behind the beauty within it. This brand is inspired by Folklore and fairytale bias, exploring the wonders of imagination through garments.
Gordon explained that “the Selkie is a woman of the ocean who lives inside a seal skin. When she comes up to the rocks, she slips out of her skin to bask in the sun. If a man is able to steal her skin while she sleeps, she is forced to become his wife and live on land. But, if the selkie finds her skin again, she transforms back into her true form and immediately returns to the sea, free.”
With a meaningful back story such as this, I am even more compelled towards the brand and what it stands for. This is female empowerment and the determination to be your true self by objecting to oppression with self-expression.
Inclusive Garments
One major stand-out factor that we received from Selkie is the respectable inclusivity across the entire line. Their clothes are aimed at anyone of any size and age, and this is a massive step for fashion week. Of course, it has been done before, but the fact that chubbier and more mature models are climbing their way up the fashion ladder is a great statement in itself. I wish more household-named brands were open when it comes to body shapes and types. Maybe then the industry wouldn’t hold as many negative connotations. We are begging for more diversity in the industry, and Selkie loves to provide for us.
The array of colours acted as a glorious painting across the catwalk canvas and transported us into a fairytale. These tones collaborated to uphold an assortment of dreamy garments, creating a strong aesthetic that consistently linked throughout. Some varied colours, such as pastels, plain white, yellows and beige, coupled with jet-black accessories and attachments, contrasted beautifully. A great and cohesive attribute that I fell in love with!
What About Accessories?
Accessories can either ruin, uplift or go unnoticed when styling an outfit, and Selkie approached this with great success. Classy umbrellas partnered with a few garments, and these were adorable! It is a true elevation on their part that reestablishes the vibe of the collection. It is a feature I haven’t seen commonly throughout runways.
Despite the umbrellas bringing a sense of whimsy, what topped it and definitely is one of my favourite associations with the line is the addition of the butterfly nets. It is a quaint touch. Also, all I think about are these models joining a fairy picnic and collecting butterflies together gayly. Selkie intentionally related to folklore and, in my opinion, cottage core with all these minor details and succeeded with such.
Selkie and Their Corsets
Small touches speak volumes when we talk about fashion. The corsets involved are an eccentric touch to the garments and finish off the complete looks, juxtaposing where necessary and relating where needed. Corsets are a creative blend of past and modern fashion, as they were popular way back when but are still such a sophisticated feature now. It derives very “old-timey” meets modern. Hats made their debut across the line, serving us milkmaids, going to the races, or Victorian swagger, and I must say they made a great alliance with the outfits.
An assortment of structures crossed the catwalk and left us with much to observe. From blown-out Crinoline skirts to mounds of gathered tulle, we felt thrilled with the thrills! The variations of skirts, sleeves and dresses show true intelligence and versatility on Selkie’s part whilst still linking and staying on brand. Hence, this is such an artistically and technically brilliant collection. The fact they have catered to different sizes will always put them a leg up on diversity and practical skills. Providing for all is an inclusion we love to see and to style them so perfectly is another touch of perfection.
As an overall construct of female beauty, empowerment and body positivity, I cannot see a single fault with a line such as this. Selkie lets models glide the runway in gorgeous attire and grace us with a fairytopia of glam. Despite my regular alternative and quirky tastes, I fell in love with this pure and captivating line. I want more!
