Lewis Hamilton Proves Why The Met Gala Deserves To Spotlight More Menswear
While sometimes they can be few and far between, we love it when men go all out at the Met Gala. What I really look for is a commitment to the theme and branching out from a plain black tux (at this point, I think Anna Wintour should place a ban on them). But instead of focusing on those who do not participate in the evening’s dress code, we are going to give those who do their flowers (a saying that, like these attendees, falls in line with the theme).
Bad Bunny
2024 Met Gala Choice: Maison Margiela
One thing about Bad Bunny is that he will go all out at the Met Gala. Acting as one of this year’s co-chairs, the singer wore a Maison Margiela look that perfectly tied into the ‘Garden of Time’ dress code by channelling a historical, almost Tudor-esque look. Benito wore a midnight blue wool smoking jacket, complete with black grosgrain lapels worn over a custom satin corset. The suit was accessorised with leather gloves, a wool bouquet, diamond-shaped sunglasses and, of course, the midnight blue foam hat that stole the show.
While you may think the look ends there, there’s one more styling choice that really placed Benito’s look in the world of fantastical whimsy. The pair of custom Tabi’s resembling hoofs that adorned the singer’s feet created a really interesting silhouette and structure.

Lewis Hamilton
2024 Met Gala Choice: Burberry
My favourite looks at the Met normally come with a backstory. You can really tell when attendees and designers have done a deep dive into the theme and really looked to tell a story with their look, and that’s exactly what Lewis Hamilton and Burberry did this year.
Inspired by the story of John Ystumllyn, an 18th-century gardener who was abducted from western Africa and brought to North Wales, where he reportedly became the first Black gardener. This, therefore, took a really different approach to the ‘Garden of Time’ dress code than a lot of that we saw this year, not only tying in history and horticulture but Hamilton commenting on his look, sharing that the thorns that adorned his neck represented the pain caused by the slave trade.
I always really appreciate when celebrities use fashion to shed light on political and social issues, which was both surprisingly and disappointingly absent from this year’s Met Gala. Seeing Lewis Hamilton take this opportunity to do so was a refreshing and appreciated approach.

Damiano David
2024 Met Gala Choice: Diesel
Damiano David had one of my favourite looks of the night. In a custom Diesel look that played with the wider theme of the evening ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’, the suit played with sheer fabrics to appear worn and almost disintegrated over time. This just goes to show that even a black tux can be made visually interesting and on theme, so other Met Gala men should take notes.

Jonathan Bailey
2024 Met Gala Choice: Loewe
Now, if you’ve already seen my Best Dressed list for the women of this year’s Met, you will know that Loewe was a big winner for me. Loewe remained true for the men. The Jonathans teamed up to create an amazing look that featured a statement hand-painted peony rather than a traditional bowtie. The peony was a metal flower painted and embellished with sugar crystals.

Ben Platt and Noah Galvin
2024 Met Gala Choice: Amiri
Ben Platt ascended the Met steps in American designer Amiri alongside fiancé Noah Galvin, who celebrated his 30th birthday at the event (that’s one way to ensure a fancy birthday party if you ask me). The couple wore matching suits embellished with floral details made using organic materials.
My favourite part of this look was the silhouette of the suit, which felt really refreshing compared to the traditional cut of a tux. The suit trousers were wide and long, creating a column-like shape that flowed from the more structured, almost corseted jacket. This made for a really interesting shape and a more vintage feel to the look, again tying into the theme of time.
