Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Returns: the Glamour and Style of the New Spectacular Event
Well, not exactly. The infamous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returns to our screens after a four-year hiatus. However, this time it looks different. Instead of the usual runway show, the lingerie brand will make a comeback in a feature-length film titled The Victoria’s Secret World Tour.
A New Value to Women’s Perspectives
The film is said to focus on 20 designers and creatives from across the globe, a group forming the VS20. These creatives will form subgroups from four cities: Bogota, Lagos, London and Tokyo. The film should document behind the scenes of making the collections and showcasing the designs. In March, the re-branded show was announced as having a new focus. CFO Timothy Johnson stated, “reinforce our commitment to championing women’s voices and their unique perspectives”. This would make quite the change from Victoria’s Secret’s previous reputation.
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show
The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was cancelled in 2018 after many controversies throughout its 23 years. These included issues with diversity, misogyny, transphobia, and beauty standards. And this is to name a few. Potentially the most prominent issue that led to the cancellation of the show was Les Wexner’s association with Jeffrey Epstein. These are subjects that a shiny new video cannot erase.
The re-brand of the show brings to question whether there will be a re-brand of Victoria’s Secret alongside it. Will we see a more diverse cast of models in the upcoming video? Or will it be the same unrealistic beauty standards that Victoria’s Secret has become famous for promoting? Will the brand work more to further feminism, gender equality and support the Me-Too movement? Only time will tell.
The Announcement
An Instagram post captioned ‘Stop everything—history is being made’ announced the Victoria’s Secret World Tour. It was accompanied by a video that already seemed more diverse than the previous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Shows. It is still unclear what will come of the new video. But, hopefully, this marks a change in attitudes for the lingerie giant.
While I feel that it is important not to go running back to Victoria’s Secret, this new attitude is promising. Whether you like it or not, Victoria’s Secret is one of the biggest brands worldwide. In addition, its brand image holds a huge influence over the industry and the public. The brand’s stance on issues of diversity and feminism has huge ripple effects within society. Therefore, if they cast a more inclusive group of models in their show, it is likely that others will follow suit.
This representation within the fashion industry is crucial in advancing equality within this sector and the rest of society. And while I am apprehensive about Victoria’s Secret return to our screens, this re-brand could have some positive repercussions.
The exact date for the show’s release is yet to be announced, but the documentary is said to drop in September. This marks yet another way in which the World Tour seems to distance itself from former shows. In fact, all Victoria’s Secret shows annually took place in December. But, until this autumn, we can only wait and hope that Victoria’s Secret use its platform for good this time.
