The Best Dressed at the Cannes Film Festival
If the Met Gala is the fashion world’s Superbowl, then the Cannes Film Festival is its Olympics. The two-week event takes place every May to celebrate artistic achievements within the film industry, but one thing that always stands out is the event’s fashion.
Jennifer Lawrence
Cannes 2023 Choice: Dior
Jennifer Lawrence turned heads at Cannes this year in a red custom Dior paired with an unlikely accessory. The Hunger Games actress caused quite a stir on the red carpet this year when she swapped her red heels for a pair of black flip-flops. While this may sound like a practical way to ensure that you enjoy your night without the burden of sore feet, it was actually quite the scandal, breaking the film festival’s strict dress code.
For many years, Cannes banned women from wearing flat shoes on the red carpet, a rule many have rebelled against in recent years, potentially most notably Kristen Stewart in 2018 when the actress removed her Louboutin’s and walked the red carpet barefoot. Not only was J-Law’s look flawless, but we also enjoyed her subtle rebellion against this outdated and unnecessary rule.
Natalie Portman in Dior
Cannes Festival Choice: Dior
Natalie Portman stunned in various Dior looks throughout this Cannes Film Festival. From her all-red mini dress look at the May December photocall to her sparkling archival gown at The Zone Of Interest premiere, every look was styled to perfection. However, the best of these looks had to be the replica of Christian Dior’s very own 1949 ‘Junon’ gown that the actress wore to the premiere of May December. The delicate gown featured an embellished skirt that was layered to resemble flower petals and is one of Christian Dior’s most iconic designs.
Viola Davis
Cannes Festival Choice: Valentino
Viola Davis always pulls out all the stops, and this Cannes Film Festival was no exception. Wearing a sleek one-shoulder Valentino gown complete with an extravagantly feathered coat, all eyes were on Viola at the premiere of Monster.
Gemma Chan
Cannes Festival Choice: Louis Vuitton
Gemma Chan looked impeccable in a series of Louis Vuitton looks throughout the Cannes Film Festival, but my favourite had to be the asymmetric red gown that the Marvel actress wore to the Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny premiere. The sleek gown featured a high neck, two asymmetric cut-outs around the waist and a loose knot on the hip. The gown was minimally accessorised, and its simplicity allowed all the attention to go on how perfectly the dress flowed and draped. This was easily one of my favourite Cannes looks of all time.
Naomi Campbell
Cannes Film Festival Choice: Valentino
Naomi Campbell has everyone talking at this Cannes Film Festival. The supermodel did what she does best and served looks the entire time. My favourite of Campbell’s looks was her pink and red Valentino gown to the Killers Of The Flower Moon premiere. The red gown featured various cut-outs across the bodice, creating an intricate shape and goddess-esque silhouette. The highlight of this look had to be the pairing of the vibrant red gown with a dramatic pink cape. This colour-contrasting combination is one of my all-time favourites, and while we are seeing it more and more in street-styling, it has been noticeably absent from red carpets until now.
Laura Harrier
Cannes Film Festival Choice: Saint Laurent
Laura Harrier’s simple and minimalist red carpet styling is one of my favourites at the moment. She always does just enough to keep things interesting without compromising her classic style. Harrier’s Saint Laurent gown at the Monster premiere in Cannes is a perfect example of this. The plunging black gown was simple but perfectly fitted and suited the actress’ personal style. However, the look featured a simple scarf laid over the actress’ neck and down her back, perfectly elevating the little black dress into a show-stopping moment.
Dua Lipa
Cannes Film Festival Choice: Versace
I don’t even know where to begin with this Dua Lipa look, the gown, the makeup, the bangs? The pop princess attended the premier of Omar La Fraise in an asymmetric black gown by Versace that featured a high slit and various cut-outs on the bodice. The dress was simplistically beautiful, but when paired with the hair and make-up, it felt like a 90s glam revival. This is a look that I will be thinking about for a long time.
Jourdan Dunn
Cannes Film Festival Choice: Elie Saab
Jourdan Dunn’s Cannes looks were something straight out of a fairy tale. From her pink Ashi Studio gown at the screening of The Innocent to the Cinderella-esque Elie Saab look for the La Passion De Dodin Bouffant premiere, the entire aesthetic was something out of a Disney film. The moment that this voluptuous blue gown trailed down the red carpet steps was a magical highlight of the two-week festival.
