High Fashion and More Pink Is The Secret To The New Barbie Press Tour

Margot Robbie’s red-carpet styling is a bit of a controversial topic. In the past, sseditorial editors and the internet have not been the biggest fan. But from what we have seen of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, the costuming looks impeccable. I really hope that this carries on for Margot Robbie throughout its marketing and press tour.

I have been enjoying some of Margot’s recent looks. Particularly the red Valentino cape-like gown she wore for the Babylon premiere and her green satin Bottega dress from the Governors Awards in 2022. Combining the popularity of these more recent looks and the film’s premise could result in some entertaining styling decisions for Margot during her Barbie era.

Barbie once said, “Be who you wanna be.” Today, I want to be Margot Robbie’s stylist. So, taking inspiration from ‘fan-casting’, here is my take on what I call ‘fan-styling’ for the Barbie press tour.

The Barbie Premiere

I will be fighting this corner for a long time. Still, the Barbie premiere is the perfect opportunity to wear one of Giambattista Valli’s pink Spring 2023 Couture gowns. The flamboyance of these gowns would perfectly suit the premiere. The billowing silhouettes, bows, and elaborate tulle feel hyper-feminine and camp, which is what Barbie is all about.

I would love to see many Giambattista Valli 2023 looks at the Barbie premiere. The regal style of the opening and third look from the collection would be two of my top choices. They place a modern twist on the historic bustle, making them visually exciting and fun; what the styling for Barbie should be all about.

And I am not alone in this. TikTok user Madison Jade shared my top choice for Margot’s premiere look.

Another gown from this collection that would be great for the Barbie premiere is Look 29. The pale pink is a welcomed change from the now over-saturated PP Pink that has dominated red carpets for the past couple of years. While the main body of the gown is figure-hugging and simplistic, the feathered neckline and exaggerated fishtail pack plenty of drama.

Alternatively, the Giambattista Valli Fall 2021 Couture collection also had unique looks. I would love to see Margot or any other Barbies wear at a premiere; looks 37 or 40 in particular. Still, I would like them to be pink rather than the original white just because it’s Barbie. Not everything has to be pink for Barbie, but it must be done on this occasion. These are similar to the Spring 2023 Couture gowns, with the gown’s flamboyance and sheer volume lending well to this franchise.

The Press Tour

Now, I love a press tour. If I’m excited about a film or TV show being released, I watch every single interview attached to it. For example, let’s talk Daisy Jones & The Six. I recently spoke about how much I enjoyed the press tour for Daisy Jones & The Six. Not only because I was excited about the show, but because the cast committed to their looks during it. The cast of Barbie need to follow suit.

This could be one of the pieces I feel most passionately about in this conversation. The Loewe striped mini dress from their Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear Collection looks like a literal doll’s dress. The angle and volume of the A-line skirt appear to defy gravity in a way only seen in cartoons. Combined with its micro-mini length, this makes it the perfect subtle nod to Barbie. While this does come in a pink and white colourway, I would rather see this one in the navy variation. The dress itself pays homage to Barbie’s character enough without needing to be pink.

You should brace yourself for this because I want to see Margot in Chanel. Yes, I have seen #freemargot. People are desperate to get her away from the French design house but hear me out. There is something about vintage Chanel that screams Barbie to me. The subtle pinks and tweed co-ords would be perfect for this press tour. So many celebrities opt for archival looks over current collections or custom looks. This could be when Margot’s Chanel contract works in her favour.

The After Parties

After a long evening in such an oversized gown, Margot Robbie would want to change out of the Giambattista Valli into something a little more comfortable for the after-party. So that is where these fun looks come into play. The after-party would allow for a slightly sultrier take on Barbie, which would be fun to style.

For after-party looks, archival Versace would be perfect, particularly the pink rhinestone mini dress that Paris Hilton wore to close the Spring 2023 Ready-to-Wear showBarbie co-star Dua Lipa has worn some iconic pink Versace looks. One was even on the runway as the singer made her catwalk debut, so we may be lucky enough to see them on her during the promotion of Barbie.

Moschino & Barbie

While the Moschino Spring 2015 collection may be a bit on the nose for this film, I think the playful design house should be featured in some capacity. This isn’t actually because of their Barbie collection; it’s more due to the brand’s image and style.

Moschino is the epitome of a maximalist; it is light-hearted and fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously, which are all things that I think would lend itself really well to this franchise. Maybe that’s why Jeremy Scott was inspired by Barbie in the first place. A custom piece by the designer could make for the perfect look for this film. It would act as a great last hurrah for Jeremy Scott, who recently announced that he will be stepping down as creative director.

Alternatively, the Moschino 2023 Resort collection had some incredible looks that could play with the retro element of Barbie’s rich history. Especially considering how well the 70s style suited Margot Robbie in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. The vibrant colours and floral motifs are perfect for an after-party look that feels like Barbie without being too obvious. I would love to see Margot attending an after-party in the pink crochet jumpsuit from this collection, complete with the floral platform heels that honestly look like they have come straight out of a Barbie dress-up box.
