On Wednesday, the 11th of January, the Golden Globes returned to our screens. NBC refused to broadcast the show in 2022 due to many complaints that included issues with diversity and racism. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has since worked towards improving its inclusivity and other areas that had been critiqued and was incidentally welcomed back to NBC for 2023. With this return came plenty of Old Hollywood glamour and dramatic red carpet looks, so here is the official run-down of the best Golden Globes 2023 best-dressed celebrity looks from the evening.
Jenna Ortega
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Gucci and Tiffany & Co
The It-Girl of the moment, Wednesday Adams herself, took to the red carpet in a neutral sheer Gucci gown. Starkly contrasting her gothic aesthetic in Netflix’s Wednesday, Ortega looked light and ethereal in her flowing dress that was made complete with some Tiffany & Co jewellery. Ortega’s beautiful look for the evening brought a retro feel to the otherwise modern look. Her skin and lips were light and natural, whilst her eye-makeup got the drama with a double wing and a brightening eyeshadow.
Daisy Edgar Jones
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Gucci
Channelling what we may have expected from Jenna Ortega was Daisy Edgar Jones. Daisy’s gown was custom Gucci and perfectly encapsulated the high-fashion goth aesthetic that has taken the fashion world by storm lately. The intricate black lace combined with the ruffled fishtail of the gown created the perfect look for the internet’s favourite current phrase, ‘dark femininity’.
Liza Koshy
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Morphew Atelier
Liza Koshy took the ‘underwear-as-outerwear’ trend to a new level at this year’s Golden Globes. Wearing a lacey, beaded, barely-there gown, Liza Koshy surprised us with one of our favourite looks from the night. But the daring look did not stop there. She exposed her thong when Koshy turned around to reveal the delicate draping beads over her backless gown. Her thong pays homage to a popular trend on the red carpet.
Anya Taylor Joy
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Dior and Tiffany & Co
Anya Taylor Joy is no stranger to Best Dressed Lists. Her immaculate sense of style and consistent elegance never fail to impress. Anya opted for a yellow two-piece by Dior and chunky yet minimal jewellery. Her jewellery perfectly complemented the simplicity of her look, landing her on this Golden Globes best-dressed list.
Billy Porter
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Christian Siriano
Billy Porter has done it again. He always provides the most detailed, dramatic, and iconic looks for red carpets. The Golden Globes were no exception. Porter took to the red carpet in a vibrant pink tuxedo dress by Christian Siriano, and the look speaks for itself. The ballgown silhouette is becoming a red-carpet staple for Porter as he regularly plays with the traditional gender norms attached to clothing. Every single one of his looks works to disprove fashion restrictions.
Donald Glover
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Saint Laurent
I always love when men take to the red carpet in something other than the traditional black tuxedo. At the 80th Golden Globe Awards, Donald Glover did just that. Glover’s look was a loose white set from Saint Laurent’s SS23 collection with a black tuxedo jacket, also from Saint Laurent, over the top. This look was intriguing because it balanced a vintage and futuristic feel. Donald combined the relaxed white set with a traditional tuxedo jacket and loafers. Overall, this look proves there is much more to men’s red-carpet dressing than a black suit.
Rihanna
Golden Globes 2023 Choice: Schiaparelli and Cartier
Saving the best until last, Rihanna is back! Rihanna confirmed the saying ‘fashionably late’, as she was missing from the official red carpet. She made the whole event her red carpet. Rihanna’s look oozed Old Hollywood glamour as her fitted black gown featured voluminous velvet sleeves and a train to create a vintage silhouette. The look juxtaposed an almost science-fiction-esque hairdo as Rihanna likened her tight pig-tails to Princess Leia’s iconic space buns.
