The Day ofof thethe Jackal S1 E5: AA long-awaitedlong-awaited meeting!meeting!

Few series have come along and so completely defied my expectations and altered my taste in TV as The Day of the Jackal, and this will come as no surprise to those who have read my previous reviews covering this series. The Day of the Jackal S1 E5 was no exception. I was gripping my seat for every second, especially given how heavily this instalment leans into action.

Now, let’s discuss these exciting developments and look forward to more to come!

Richard Dormer as Norman Stoke in The Day of the Jackal S1 E5

The Suspense is Killing Me!

The two worlds of our two deuteragonists, which have remained separate thus far, now begin to collide. Bianca tortures Norman’s location (Budapest) out of a hospitalised Larry. The Jackal contacts and visits Norman there. Their long-awaited meeting is finally at hand.

No less engaging is the fallout Bianca faces at home from her cut-throat attitude. Visiting her husband and daughter, who have moved in with his ex-wife, Bianca is bluntly told by the man she loves that she is more committed to her job than her family.

As Bianca prepares to hunt down her target, Norman and the Jackal contemplate a new, lethal weapon built with 3D printing technology.

Meanwhile, Nuria is still suspicious of her husband, a masterful example of foreshadowing as Norman tells the Jackal over a drink that men like them can’t have wives. Will Nuria prove to be the Jackal’s downfall?

Finally, Bianca tracks down Norman, with the Jackal only a hair’s breadth away.

A Much-Awaited Meeting!

The powder keg explodes. Bianca leads a raid on Norman’s house, which the Jackal barely has time to warn him about. After a heart-stopping gun fight within his weapon-laden lair, Bianca interrogates Norman to no avail.

Alas, any further hope of getting information from Norman is lost; the Jackal takes him out to cover his tracks. He almost succeeds in taking out Bianca, getting his first up-close look at her through his scope before impressively escaping on a horse, much to Bianca and her team’s bewilderment. This brilliantly tense first meeting is made even more palpable when Bianca gives chase, getting so close to the Jackal that she fires rounds into the dark lake he dives into in his rush to escape.

I felt her scream of anguish as she realised that, without Norman, she is now back to square one, with time running out for the Jackal’s next victim. Lashana once again blew me away with her performance, conveying so much raw anger and frustration that I trembled to think how much further she might have to go to achieve her ends.

The action of the episode was nicely rounded off as, barely alive, the Jackal crawls into a shed, only to be captured and bound by a mysterious man with unknown intentions.

The Day of the Jackal S1 E5 conclusions

Lashana was the standout star of the episode for me. You could see the pain playing across her face as she exchanged harsh words and brutal realities with her husband, and finally realised what her pursuit of the Jackal was doing to her own family.

I also liked how we see Nuria struggling to reconcile her love for her husband with the fact that she knows he is lying. As her character and plotline create a thorn in his side, she may well prove his undoing. If that is indeed what the writers are setting up, they are doing it well.
