The Day ofof thethe Jackal S1 E3: EverybodyEverybody lies, lies, andand everybodyeverybody payspays

I found myself quickly returning to this excellent series in need of something gripping to distract me from an unexpectedly chaotic November. And my am I glad I did! The Day of the Jackal S1 E3 took everything I’d enjoyed about the previous two and developed them into something truly edgy and subversive. Once again, I find myself feeling grateful that I came across this hidden gem of a drama!

And so, once more, let’s get up to speed with The Jackal, Bianca, and the people left in their wake.

WARNING: Spoilers for episode three below!

Characters in order of first mention:

  1. Kate Dickie plays Alison Stoke
  2. Patrick O’Kane plays Larry Stoke
  3. Lashana Lynch plays Bianca Pullman
  4. Úrsula Corberó plays Nuria
  5. Eddie Redmayne plays The Jackal
  6. Lucas Englander plays Elias Fest

The Fallout

In what must be the strongest start to an episode yet, we see Alison and Larry distraught. The couple make their way to London upon learning of their daughter’s tragic death. An expertly crafted close-up shot of Alison conveys the depth of her loss, as Kate Dickie delivers a heartrending performance, staring blankly through eyes brimming with tears.

Kate Dickie plays Alison Stoke in The Day of the Jackal S1 E3.

The death of Emma has brought Bianca and her operation to the brink, and only by discovering how The Jackal concealed his murder weapon (a collapsible gun in the form of a suitcase) does she escape infamy.

Patrick O'Kane plays Larry Stoke in The Day of the Jackal S1 E3.

Larry and Alison start to unravel, as the former contacts his brother Norman, and then contacts Bianca behind his back.

Larry refuses to give up Norman, but once he learns how close his brother came to arrest, and the role his wife played in it, he snaps. We observe a truly chilling spectacle as this grieving couple turns on each other, and Larry attacks Alison.

You Can’t Trust Anyone

Lashana Lynch plays Bianca Pullman in The Day of the Jackal S1 E3.

Bianca finds herself being investigated as everyone struggles to understand how Norman learned about the raid. Conspiracy shrouds Bianca’s efforts as a close friend warns her that he suspects someone in their midst tipped off Norman. As her colleague so aptly puts it in what has to be the most memorable line of the episode: ‘You can’t trust anyone. Everyone lies about everything’.

Fittingly, throughout the episode, an increasingly paranoid Nuria and her family explore her house to uncover The Jackal’s secrets. She knows nothing about his work as an assassin, and the uncovering of a secret room only serves to confirm her fears.

Every one of them seems utterly ensnared in this web of lies.

Yet another stunning action sequence closes out the episode, just as The Jackal’s codename is found in Norman’s phone. The Jackal kills Fest’s bodyguard, kidnaps him, and runs rampant through the streets of Amsterdam, leaving destruction in his wake. The twist of the previous episode pays off. Elias confirms he did indeed hire him to kill his dad, the politician assassinated in episode one, before refusing to pay him. The Jackal kills him out of spite with the words ‘fuck you’.

Eddie Redmayne plays The Jackal in The Day of the Jackal S1 E3.

This moment of personal victory turns sour as he watches a terrible scene unfold on his phone. His wife and her family have found his workshop, with all his weaponry, money and passports. In this way, does he have the rug pulled out from under him just as he embarks on his most daring mission yet?

The previous two episodes left me stunned and reeling as the credits rolled, eager for more about these characters and where their paths will lead. It is their motivations, choices, and actions which I find irresistible and utterly compelling, and this episode was no different.

If I wasn’t completely hooked before, I most certainly am now!
