Remi Afolabi: Parasite Is So Good; I’ve Watched it Twice!

  • This article was updated in May 2023 to reflect magazine changes.

At SSEDITORIAL, one of our primary focuses as a team, set out by our Editor in Chief is our mental health. It is important to us to put these matters first. As we all continue to take our health seriously, I asked my friend Remi Afolabi about life during Covid-19. All communications were conducted virtually to support social distancing and lockdown restrictions.

SS:

How are your spirits, Remi?

RA:

I’m doing okay-ish right now. As an introvert, our earlier lockdowns were a breeze for me personally, but now I’m starting to get the itch. I’m in dire need of socialising!! The recent news of things starting to open and up and move forward soon is something to look forward to now!

SS:

What’s the one thing on your list to do, as soon as the lockdown measures ease?

RA:

I’m going to hit up as many brunch spots as I can with close friends!!

Style

SS:

Speaking of brunch spots, can you give me the perfect Remi-approved outfit for a date with the girls at brunch?

RA:

Ooo yes. An oversized blazer thrown over a silky slip dress, paired with chunky boots, a small side bag, and a pair of cool sunglasses for good measure.

SS:

I love that idea! You mentioned a blazer and a slip dress, which leads me to ask, how would you describe your personal style?

RA:

For now, I would say my style is relaxed with an edge or statement. I like to play around with silhouettes, colours and prints or patterns, where I can look to elevate my looks.

SS:

This has to be one of my favourite looks on your feed. What was the process behind putting this look together?

RA:

Thank you! This day I had to visit my sister quickly. All the items I am wearing were new purchases. I tried them on altogether as I was getting ready, and thought they all looked okay together, so I wore the outfit out. My sister liked the look and encouraged me to a few pics, and the rest is history, ha!

SS:

Which brands are on your list of favourites, to shop for your closet?

RA:

Weekday has been my ultimate fave for a while now. Also Zara, H&M’s trend line, and Urban Outfitters are top contenders too.

SS:

What luxury brands are you into on the opposite end of the price spectrum? Do you own a few pieces already?

RA:

I’m into luxury brands such as Acne Studios, Balenciaga, Burberry, Ganni, Jacquemus and Nanushka. If the money was long, you’d probably spot me in their clothes, shoes and accessories here and there!

SS:

Do you own a few pieces already?

RA:

I own a few luxury clothes and shoes from Alexander Wang, Givenchy, and Kenzo brands. I’ll be looking to sell some of these pieces on soon, as I’ve outgrown the garments. They’re not my style anymore.

Lifestyle

SS:

Has the pandemic changed your outlook on life in any way?

RA:

Absolutely. Firstly, spending much more time with my friends, which I didn’t do too often pre-pandemic! Secondly, is to stop doubting myself and push on with things I have always dreamed of doing, which has worked well for me lately. Weirdly enough, if it weren’t for the pandemic, I wouldn’t be working on my next business venture right now. Through this new journey, I’m definitely picking up much-needed entrepreneurial skills.

SS:

What is one way, you have learnt how to stay positive during challenging times?

RA:

I think just spending time doing the little things that genuinely make me happy has helped me to stay positive through difficult periods. Whether it be reading a book, watching YouTube or TikTok videos, organising my skincare collection, journaling, or watching a movie with my family!

SS:

What are you currently watching that you recommend?

RA:

Okay. So I’ve had a slight obsession with South Korean dramas and movies for a few years now, so I recommend the drama series ‘The World of the Married’ and the film ‘Parasite’. ‘The Boys’ series on Amazon Prime Video is also a must watch!

SS:

Any TV series?

RA:

My favourite current reads are Good Vibes, Good Life by Vix King and Siddhartha by Herman Hesse.

“Parasite is definitely worth the hype. I’ve watched it twice so far!! ”

SS:

Finally, are there any other accounts you have followed for inspiration during these difficult times?

RA:

Goodness, there are so many, but I’ll narrow it down to monikh for style inspiration, christinaebenezer_ for fashion photography, okdeon as I’m obsessed with his aesthetic and benrich__ for Japanese inspiration as it’s my fave place in the world. I’m hoping to head back there when it is safe to do so!
