Get inin thethe Christmas spirit:spirit: EasyEasy andand funfun activitiesactivities toto trytry thisthis yearyear
Christmas time is my favourite time of year. The meaning of Christmas is beautiful in itself. The Christmas festivity brings a unique joy that fills the air with warmth, laughter, and anticipation, with the magic felt heavily in the air. Not forgetting all of the cosy, festive, and Christmassy activities that you can get up to, making it the best time of year, in my opinion.
As the days grow colder, holiday lights begin to twinkle, and the world seems to transform into a winter wonderland. Whether you’re a fan of traditional festivities or looking for new ways to celebrate, there’s an endless list of activities that capture the spirit of Christmas. Here are some classic and creative ways to make the most of this magical time of year.
Deck the Halls
Christmas festivity: Decorating your space
Decorating your home is one of the first steps to embracing the season with all its sparkle and Christmas cheer. Setting up a Christmas tree is the ultimate first step. Choosing your Christmas tree can be just as festive as decorating it. Grab a hot chocolate and see which Christmas tree calls your name. A real Christmas Tree will always be my favourite, as the smell is unmatched and the experience of picking it is always fun and festive!
Hanging stockings by the fireplace, adding Christmas ornaments and pillows or throws, and adorning your front door with a festive wreath are wonderful ways to transform your space. Get creative by making homemade ornaments or trying out new holiday themes, such as rustic woodland or classic red and gold. Don’t forget to light candles or use festive scents like cinnamon and pine to create a cosy, inviting atmosphere.
Lights outside your home can also be a great way to add decorative elements. However, this can be expensive, so if it’s not for you, don’t worry. There are many budget-friendly options to get your house in the festive spirit.

Host a Gathering
Christmas festivity: Xmas cheer
Christmas is all about coming together with family and friends, so why not host a festive gathering? A holiday party can be simple or grand, from a cosy hot chocolate night to an elegant Christmas Eve dinner. Create a menu of seasonal treats, such as spiced cookies, peppermint bark, and mulled wine, and bring everyone together for a night of laughter and delicious food. You can even incorporate games like holiday trivia or Christmas-themed bingo to keep the fun going.
Another popular idea is to host an “ugly jumper” party, where guests wear their most outrageous holiday sweaters. It’s a playful way to relax, laugh, and celebrate the season with loved ones.
Go Christmas Carolling
Christmas festivity: Xmas spirit
Though it may feel old-fashioned, Christmas carolling is a beautiful tradition that brings people together through music. Gather friends or family, dress warmly, and go carolling around your neighbourhood. Search for carol events near you, and your local church will surely have a carol service in December. You’ll be surprised at the smiles and warm greetings you’ll receive. Carolling is not only fun, but it also reminds people of the simple joy that comes from shared traditions.
Give Back to the Community
Christmas festivity: Altruism
Christmas is the season of giving, and one of the most fulfilling ways to celebrate is by helping those in need. Volunteer at a local food bank, participate in a toy drive or donate to charities supporting families during the holidays. You can find ways to help those in need in your local area. For example, the Samaritan’s shoebox operation is a great way to give back and help the children who need it the most.
The act of giving back not only spreads cheer to others but also fills your heart with the true spirit of the season. Bringing joy to others is one of the most meaningful ways to celebrate the Christmas season.
Go Ice Skating/visit Christmas markets
Christmas festivity: Get active
Nothing captures the spirit of winter quite like an afternoon of ice skating. Many cities and towns set up festive outdoor rinks, often surrounded by twinkling lights and holiday music. Ice skating is a fun and traditional activity suitable for all ages. However, I admit I didn’t realise how hard ice skating can be. Last year, I was holding the edge of the rink for dear life, but don’t fear, as once you get the hang of it, it’s great (or ask for a penguin to help stabilise you).
If skating isn’t for you, take a winter walk in a nearby park or a stroll through a Christmas market to enjoy the season’s beauty. Christmas markets are my favourite, not only do they evoke that festive spirit, but the incredible things you can find are a must! Bring a thermos of hot chocolate to keep warm as you soak in the crisp air and take in the festive lights.

Watch Christmas Movies
Christmas festivity: Xmas love
A cosy night with Christmas films is a must during the holiday season. Whether it’s the classics like It’s a Wonderful Life or more modern favourites like Elf, Home Alone, or The Santa Claus, holiday films bring nostalgia and joy. Make a whole evening of it by baking cookies, making popcorn, and settling under a blanket. Watching movies with loved ones can be a perfect way to unwind, laugh, and feel the warmth of the season.
Bake Holiday Treats
Christmas festivity: Holiday weight
Christmas wouldn’t be complete without the delicious smells of holiday baking wafting through the kitchen. Baking treats such as cookies and cakes together as a family or on your own is a beloved holiday tradition. Try making gingerbread men, sugar cookies to decorate, or traditional Christmas pudding. Holiday baking can also double as a meaningful gift—wrap up homemade treats and share them with neighbours, friends, or coworkers.
Attend a Holiday Light Display
Christmas festivity: Community love
Many towns and cities go all out with their Christmas lights, creating spectacular displays for the community to enjoy. Drive-through light displays are increasingly popular, allowing you to enjoy the magic of the season from the warmth of your car. Walking through a local light display or visiting a decorated park can be equally enchanting, especially with Christmas music playing in the background. These experiences bring out the wonder of the season, making them perfect for a family outing or a romantic date night.

Embrace the Magic of the Season
Remember, at the end of the day, Christmas is all about joy, kindness, and gratitude for what we have above all. There are countless ways to enjoy the Christmas season, each offering its own brand of joy and warmth. Whether you’re spending time with family and friends or taking a moment to reflect on your own, these festive activities are a great way to connect with others, spread kindness, and embrace the spirit of Christmas. So what are you waiting for—light up your tree, get out your cosiest jumper, and let the festivities begin!
