The 7 Reasons Why Verona Is the Ultimate Travel Destination

Nestled on the River Adige in Veneto lies the beautiful, romantic, vibrant and enchanting Northern Italian city of Verona. In this city, you will come across a place full of culture, charm, and history. Every cobbled street you turn is atmospheric and picturesque. You will see classic architecture, scenic views, iconic Italian markets and landmarks (have I sold it to you yet?!).

I feel as though bellissima Verona doesn’t get as much of the fuss as her fellow sisters (Milan, Venice, Florence…). In my opinion, Verona isn’t talked about nearly half as much as it should be. For some reason, it is not high on many people’s “Must-see destination lists”. However, get excited, as I will change that for you! Verona will become your next love interest, so buckle up and try not to become too obsessed (if that’s possible).

Verona

1. Shakespearean Romance in Verona

Verona is the true definition of “the city of love”. This is thanks to Shakespeare’s timeless tragedy, Romeo and Juliet, which adds an undeniable allure to the city. You can explore Juliet’s breathtaking house, which is believed to be the inspiration behind the Capulet residence. Tourists can stand beneath Juliet’s balcony, where lovers worldwide leave love notes. Visitors can also capture themselves standing upon the most iconic balcony of all time, taking in the surreal views.

As you travel through Juliet’s house, you can find art, sculptures, costumes, pottery, and furniture from the 16th century. Tourists can discover even more about the story’s background and history, with heart lockets and couples’ initials everywhere. Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a literature enthusiast, Verona offers a chance to step into the pages of one of the greatest love stories ever told.

2. Architectural Marvels and Must-See Spots in Verona

Verona boasts an astounding blend of architectural styles spanning back centuries. For example, the well-preserved Roman amphitheatre, the Arena di Verona, is a site to see! Thanks to a concert I attended, I could experience going inside and exploring. This was an experience I will never forget, as it was truly magical! Inside Arena di Verona, you feel transported back in time, seeing the history and heritage unfold before you. You might forget for a moment that you’re in the 21st century.

Duomo di Verona is another site to behold. The church is a beautiful and grand cathedral with intricate Gothic details and a rich, meaningful history. It was an incredibly peaceful, mesmerising and meaningful experience to have. You can light a candle after your visit, saying a prayer that is most meaningful to you.

There was also a beautiful book at the entrance where you could write a prayer if you would like. Seeing the book filled with prayers in so many different languages was sincerely touching. You will have the opportunity to realise what really matters in life. At the end of the day, health and happiness are all that humans need for their loved ones and themselves. Whether you follow a religion or not, it’s truly a blessing to witness and a privilege to see.

3. Torre dei Lamberti

Torre dei Lamberti is another iconic architectural marvel that Verona holds within its arms. It is an 84-metre high tower with a breathtaking 360 view overlooking the historic city. Seeing the astounding views of the whole city before you is a breathtaking experience. Visitors are in awe of the views and how truly remarkable Verona is.

Fun little fact- there is a clear lift that takes you up, but there are also stairs that run along the vertical inner perimeter. However, the stairs are not for the faint of heart (there is more than you can imagine). Personally, if you can, I think choosing the stairs allows for the most authentic (and well worth it) experience. This may also be a fun way to challenge yourself and laugh at yourself too. It’s safe to say that I went up via the stairs, and after contemplating my life decisions halfway up (don’t worry, I’m just dramatic), I decided to take the lift when going back down (a good balance if you ask me).

4. Italian Markets

The Iconic Italian markets in Verona take place in Piazza delle Erbe, a bustling historic market square dating back to the Romans. It is no wonder that this is one of the most picturesque and historic squares in Italy. This is the exact centre of Verona and holds sculptures, many sumptuous buildings, incredible restaurants and cafes, and, of course, the markets. The market atmosphere can only be described as ideal, with locals and visitors laughing together, exploring all of what’s to offer (which is a lot).

It’s just an atmosphere that can only be understood fully once you’re there! With so much to discover, from jewellery, clothes and souvenirs to food, paintings, ceramics and pottery (to name only a few), I unearthed some great finds at these markets, along with the colourful rigatoni I picked up, which insanely divine!

5. Verona Always Has More To Discover

There is something to discover at every turn in Verona, with a warm and comforting smell of flowers everywhere you go, with the most ravishing landscaping, such as the multi-colourful buildings covered with sun-kissed yellows, oranges, peaches, muted reds, pinks and more, and with the stunning rivers and river bridges that make you fall in love with the city all over again; such as the Ponte di Pietra and its breathtaking view.

There is such joy in getting a coffee and pastry at a cafe (so many to choose from), sitting out at 10 am on a weekday, and seeing people pleasurably getting theirs, too. You can sit and enjoy the view without the rush and madness, and instead, a beautiful calmness that creates the most enjoyable atmosphere.

Ponte di Castelvecchio is a place I couldn’t recommend more. Walking across it at any time is a highlight in itself, but especially at sunset, coming here before an evening meal, seeing the colour palette of Italy which is unmatched by any other place on earth, and relaxing in the evening light (bring your camera, it will be magnificent).

6. Giardino Giusti in Verona

The Giardino Giusti gardens are not only a top choice in Verona but will be unlike anything you have ever seen. It will blow you away and make you speechless, as it feels like you’re living in an Italian dream! Across the river from the historic centre lies these sculpted gardens, which are considered a masterpiece of Renaissance landscaping. The vegetation is a mix of manicured and natural and is named after the noble family that has tended to them since the gardens were opened to the public in 1591. Fun little fact- according to local legend, lovers who manage to find each other in the garden’s labyrinth are destined to stay together.

7. Travel to Verona is a Necessity

There are so many wonders to Verona and more places to discover within it. For example, other things include the exquisite food, the art museums, the location of Verona (as it is only a short flight from the UK, and also the perfect short distance away from Venice for an unforgettable day trip via very easily accessible trains), the parks, the shops, and the fact that you can walk everywhere!

But don’t take my word for it. Go and see it all for yourself, create your own Verona fairytale, fall in love with this magical city, and scream about it from the rooftops! Have the adventure of a lifetime, and create the most precious memories. The thing with Verona is that you become attached and will want to keep coming back, never getting bored or tired of this magnificent city. The great thing about Verona is that she is always there with open arms. In your story, your next travel chapter has Verona written all over it, and we can’t argue with destiny, can we?!
